Nearly 50 years old and already a celebrated engineer-driver and author, Taruffi opted to drive solo (most rivals still carried a navigator), and he averaged an astounding 150 km/h (93 mph) across the public roads from Brescia to Rome and back. His victory was bittersweet: a tragic accident involving the leading Ferrari of Alfonso de Portago later in the event claimed several lives, prompting authorities to ban the Mille Miglia in its original form.
